"I chose a very large room in the basement for my performance. The space had a low ceiling, a dirt floor, and contained a massive stone fireplace support. One side of this huge block opened to form a niche. I was seated in the niche facing the opening, with glowing coals around my share. About a foot away, an empty chair faced me. The room was black except for a small ray of light leading toward the niche from the next room in the basement. People who wanted to see the piece had to ask Michael Shapiro, the organizer of the show. He escorted each person, one at a time, to a locked door and through the lighted room of the basement, leaving them at the entrance to the large dark space and returning to the party upstairs. Each person was left to discover my presence and accept the invitation of the empty chair. Because each person spent about half an hour with me, only fifteen people were able to participate in the piece. Although there was no indication by me that they should not discuss the piece, the participants refused to disclose their experiences to those waiting outside."
